Poroshenko confirms request to UN and EU about peacekeepers - Lavrov warns and denies | Русская весна

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko has confirmed the decision of the Council for National Security and Defense to address the United Nations and the European Union about launching the international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine to support peace and security, the Council’s website reports on Monday.

The document reads head of the Council for National Security and Defense Oleksandr Turchinov will control implementation of the decision. This question may be on the agenda of Ukraine’s parliament on Monday. A week earlier, Russia’s Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Andrey Kelin said that the initiative to deploy peacekeepers in Ukraine was at the earliest stage of discussion but that mechanism for it had not been envisaged in the recently adopted resolution of the UN Security Council.

Lavrov's reaction was fast and clear-cut. He said that the package of measures on implementation of the Minsk agreements does not mention any other international presence besides the OSCE.

"It does not mention any other form of international presence but the OSCE mission," Lavrov told journalists in Geneva on Monday.

"I am convinced that now it is important to focus on an overwhelming, full-fledged implementation of the February 12 documents," he stressed.

"One gets the impression that by such new ideas, someone is trying to protract the process of implementation of the remaining key provisions of the Minsk Package," Lavrov said.
