Former head of Ukrainian Customs in Lugansk Oleg Chernousov has defected to Lugansk People's Republic because he did not want to take part, even indirectly, in the so-called “Anti-Terrorist Operation” (ATO) in Donbass. It was announced by Chernousov at a press conference in Lugansk today.

“Clearly, the Ukrainian customs authorities collect taxes and duties going then into state budget, which they use to finance [the so-called ATO]. I’m through with that. My decision to return to Lugansk came after some time of watching and analysing the activities of the Ukrainian authorities. I didn’t agree with their politics, with what’s happening now in Ukraine. They’re completely denying our history, they deny that they’re fighting a civil war, they deny that their engagement in genocide of their own people residing in People's Republics. It has been piling up for some time and resulted in the decision not to take part in any of that. My family supported me,” – he said.

Oleg Ivanovich Chernousov was born July 6th, 1968 in Lugansk. He got two university degrees, at the Mozhaisky Military Engineering Institute and the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management. He served in the customs since 1993. Before his appointment in Lugansk on 4th June 2013 he was the First Deputy Head of Poltava Customs. From May to December 2014, he headed Lugansk Customs. He officially resigned on 12th June 2015. He is an Honoured Customs Officer of the Ukraine, was awarded with the decoration “For Faultless Service in Ukrainian Customs” and the order “For Faultless Service in Ukrainian Customs".
